A port city that never quite stopped being a port city — the diamond quarter closes early, the Scheldt moves slow, and somewhere between the guild houses and the Moroccan grocery stores there is a version of this place that doesn't show up in anything printed after 2015. She came partly because it's an easy train from Brussels and partly because she wants to stand in a city that made itself rich on other people's movement and see what that looks like now.
