Tuesday — The castle, the river, the bridge that should not work aesthetically but does
Tuesday, June 23, 2026 Bratislava Castle grounds / SNP Bridge / UFO observation level / Petržalka edge
on the pedestrian deck of a cable-stayed bridge whose single central pylon rises directly behind her, stay-cables fanning outward in a geometry of held tension, the deck surface pale concrete, the Danube below matte and wide, Petržalka's repetitive slab facades stretching flat to the horizon on the far bank — stopped mid-crossing, turned slightly back toward the pylon — not posing, but caught between continuing and looking at the engineering above her

The western terrace before seven. Jeans still cold at the knees, the linen already doing more than it needed to, and below — the Danube, the surface matte and greenish-grey, catching no light because there was no light to catch yet, just the flat overcast pressing everything even. Across the water, Petržalka spread flat and long: panel after panel of housing in beige and something closer to bone, and without shadows the facades had no depth, no menace, just surface repeated until it became a kind of quiet.

I crossed the SNP Bridge on foot. The single pylon pulls the entire deck from one point, cables fanning out like a held breath, and the UFO saucer sits on top of it all as if someone made a bet and won. It should read as absurd. The engineering is too confident for that.

inside a courtyard enclosed by two residential panel blocks, their rendered concrete facades stained at the joints, a dark archway passage behind her — the threshold between the street and this unplanned interior space, the arch framing the lane beyond it in precise rectangle — just sat down on a low wall, windbreaker in lap being folded into the bag — she has not yet looked up at the card players; she is still in the motion of staying

Three blocks into Petržalka I took a wrong turn and ended up in a courtyard between two residential blocks — not planned, not on anything I had looked at. A group of older men were playing cards at a folding aluminum table. Beer, small glasses, the bottles set on the ground beside the chairs. A radio above somewhere, a woman's voice, something with strings underneath it. One man looked up, not unkindly, and I found a low wall and sat. The windbreaker came off. I folded it into my bag. A woman crossed the far end of the courtyard with a shopping bag in each hand and did not look at any of us.

I bought a coffee from a window kiosk on the way back in — paper cup, no lid, drank it standing at the edge of the courtyard before I left. Bitter, a little scorched, exactly right.

The single white pylon of SNP Bridge rising from the deck, cables fanning to both sides, UFO saucer visible at the top against a washed-out pale sky

I walked back over the bridge in the evening. The sky was still pale, a washed-out grey-white with one streak of warmer color low in the west, not quite gold, not quite not.

on the pedestrian deck of the same cable-stayed bridge returning eastward, the single pylon now behind her, ahead the old city bank, the sky a washed-out grey-white with one low horizontal streak of warm colour — not gold — pressed flat just above the roofline, the Danube below catching the faintest warm register in the west-facing water — walking but slowed almost to stillness, eyes on the streak of colour at the horizon — not looking at the city, looking at the sky just above it

What she wore
day3-scene1
I was at the western terrace before seven, jeans still cold from the morning air, the linen already doing more than it needed to.
day3-scene2
The windbreaker came off somewhere between the bridge and the third block — I folded it into my bag and the skirt was already the right thing for the light.
day3-scene3
I put the blazer on when the light went long and golden and I didn't want the evening to end yet — it was that kind of addition.
