Day 3 · New York City
Thursday — The Library Version
Thursday, October 15, 2026 Morningside Heights / Washington Heights
inside a library reading room with twenty-foot ceilings, tall casement windows running along one wall, dark wood tables and ladder-back chairs, the overcast sky outside rendering the light flat and sourceless, no shadows anywhere in the room — she has stopped reading; book open but untouched, eyes lifted toward the high window, a page-turn sound from across the room still fading

The chair in the Avery reading room has a sound when you shift in it. Not loud — just present. Wood on wood, the small adjustment of weight. I sat in it for a long time.

I'd brought nothing. That was the decision. No notebook, no purpose — just the coat folded over the back of the chair and a book pulled from the shelf without looking too long. Something about the thermal history of masonry. I read four pages and understood two of them and that was fine. The room has high windows and the overcast outside made the light even and still, no shadows, no heat. The wood of the chair was cool through the turtleneck. Someone across the room turned a page every four or five minutes. Nobody was performing anything.

I left when I'd had enough. That's the only measure I use in there.

The George Washington Bridge span — cables and grey sky — framed by two misaligned building facades, caught between them mid-block

Broadway north of 116th opens up and the wind finds you. I buttoned the coat with more intention than I'd bothered with all morning — the loose button on the left, the one I keep meaning to deal with. It held.

Past 145th, the storefronts change the way storefronts do when a neighborhood stops receiving a certain kind of attention. Plastic-wrapped carnations in front of a bodega, cellophane fogged at the tips. A pharmacy with its own hand-lettered hours on the glass. Merengue coming from somewhere that wasn't visible. The hill pulled the light differently and for a moment the bridge appeared between two buildings — not centered, not framed, just the span of it, cables and grey sky, and then a truck passed and it was gone.

a wide wind-exposed stretch of a northbound avenue in the upper hundreds, low-rise brick storefronts on both sides, a bodega's cellophane-wrapped carnations in the foreground, hand-lettered pharmacy hours visible in the glass behind her — she has stopped mid-stride facing the gap between two buildings where the bridge span appeared; truck has just passed, the cables gone again, she is waiting for them to return

I stood there until it came back.

Deli coffee in a blue-and-white Greek cup, lid already snapped on, held at the rim by S's gloved fingers

Coffee from a counter where the cup came with the lid already on. I drank it on the corner. It was correct.

a street corner in the upper hundreds, a paper coffee cup with a white lid in hand, low brick buildings behind her, a metal pole with layered stickers at the edge of frame, the wide avenue receding into overcast distance — she has just taken the first sip through the lid; cup lowered two inches, gaze drifted sideways to something off-frame, not looking at the coffee, not looking for anything

What she wore
day3-scene1
I put on the ribbed skirt because it has enough weight to feel like something without requiring any decisions.
day3-scene2
I threw the blazer on when I left the library — Broadway gets windier once you pass 116th and the hill starts.
day3-scene3
By the time I found the bridge through the gap between the buildings it was nearly five, the coat buttoned properly for once.
